Today, as we observe Purple Heart Day, I’m taking a moment to reflect on a chapter of my life that profoundly shaped who I am today. While many of you know me as a photographer capturing the beauty and essence of everyday moments, my journey began in a vastly different environment—one that tested my resolve and skill under extreme pressure.

In 2004, while serving as a combat photographer with the U.S. Marine Corps, I was stationed with Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 7th Marines in Iraq. On May 1st of that year, our unit was hit by a roadside bomb (IED) in Husaybah, Iraq. That day, about ten Marines, including myself, were injured by the blast. The explosion was a stark reminder of the perilous conditions we faced daily.

The immediate aftermath was chaotic. I was knocked unconscious momentarily, only to wake up to enemy fire coming from multiple directions. Amidst this chaos, fellow Marines bravely provided medical aid while I resumed my role—documenting the scene. Despite the intense environment and ongoing threats, I continued to capture powerful images that conveyed the reality of our situation.

On June 26th, 2004, I was awarded the Purple Heart Medal in Al Qaim, Iraq, in recognition of my wounds and the courage displayed that day. This medal is not just a personal honor but a symbol of the sacrifice and bravery of all service members who face the realities of combat.

Being a combat photographer required more than just technical skills; it demanded an ability to deliver high-quality images under the most challenging conditions. The need to capture critical moments accurately while managing personal safety and operational demands was paramount. The experiences I had during this period honed my ability to stay focused and deliver exceptional work, no matter the pressure.

As a photographer today, I carry with me the lessons learned from those intense moments. The discipline and precision required in combat photography have shaped my approach to every shoot. Whether capturing a family portrait, a real estate property, or a corporate event, I apply the same level of dedication and professionalism to ensure that every image I deliver meets the highest standards.

On this Purple Heart Day, I’m honored to share one of the powerful images I took on that fateful day in Iraq. It stands as a testament to the resilience of those who served and the enduring spirit of capturing truth and emotion, even in the face of adversity.

To all the service members who have been awarded the Purple Heart, and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice, my deepest respect and gratitude. Your bravery and sacrifice are a constant reminder of the true cost of freedom. I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to continue capturing life’s moments, and I carry with me the memories and lessons from my time in combat.

Thank you for taking the time to read this reflection. I invite you to explore the images and stories I’ve shared on my website, and I hope they offer a glimpse into the journey that has shaped my work and my life.
